The office was established in Denver, Colorado in 1972 by Dr. Robert G. Schallhorn and relocated to Aurora, Colorado in 1981. Dr. Schallhorn is a world-renowned periodontist whose vision in saving teeth helped establish groundbreaking work in periodontal regeneration. His landmark studies with hip marrow bone grafts in the 1960’s changed the way periodontics is practiced today. We are happy to continue that vision of improving the health and ultimately the quality of life for our patients.

Our dental hygienists are extremely well educated and experienced in the field of periodontics. They are key providers of active and preventive periodontal therapy. Our hygienists attend continuing education programs numerous times per year and stay abreast of the latest techniques and technologies to help our patients achieve and maintain good oral health. Dental hygienists are your key to successful long-term care. They are excellent communicators and go the extra mile to ensure a successful program, which is the heart of prevention.
We are fortunate to have exceptional dental assistants with years of chairside experience. They not only assure that our time together in treatment goes smoothly, but are involved as oral hygiene educators, providing pre- and post-surgical care and for much of the behind the scenes support, such as sterilization, cleanliness, and infection control.
You will find the front desk staff extremely professional and capable. Their experience assures that your visits are pleasant and enjoyable.
We feel it is critical to grow and learn and as a result continuing education is a key part of our office. In addition we have annual training for OSHA where infection control systems are reviewed for added safety and comfort. Our entire staff is certified in CPR annually.
Dr. McClain, a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, has been immersed in dentistry most of her life beginning at age 14 as a dental assistant in her father’s (Dr. Robert Schallhorn) office. She attended Colorado State University and the University of Colorado where she received her B.S. in Dental Hygiene. Subsequently, she attended dental school at the University of Colorado and graduated Magna Cum Laude. Her post-doctoral training in periodontics was completed at the University of California in San Francisco. She then entered private practice limited to periodontics and implants with her father in 1987.
While maintaining a fulltime private practice, she has also been active in periodontal research and teaching. She holds or has held appointments as an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Colorado School of Dentistry and as a Research Professor at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry, and has published multiple articles from her research. Her research studies in periodontal regeneration have been acknowledged as the recipient of the first R. Earl Robinson Periodontal Regeneration Award from the American Academy of Periodontology in 1989 and subsequently in 2004 and again in 2006.
Dr. McClain has also been very active in the ongoing growth and development of periodontics and standards of care via her involvement in the American Academy of Periodontology. She has served in multiple capacities and positions over the past 20 years and has been elected by her peers for her leadership abilities to be Secretary-Treasurer of the American Academy of Periodontology in 2008, Vice President in 2009, and will continue through the chairs eventually culminating in the position of President in 2011.
Dr. McClain has also been very active in teamwork with family dentists and other dental specialties. She has lectured at multiple interdisciplinary dental meetings and conferences to enhance optimal total dental care to patients. She is the second periodontist to be elected to active membership in the prestigious American Academy of Restorative Dentistry and is the first and only female periodontist to be an active member of the organization. Furthermore, she has been honored for her leadership role by being elected a Council Member by that Academy.
While her involvement in research and organized dentistry are important, her passion remains in treating patients and improving their quality of life. Her diagnostic and clinical skills of all aspects of therapy coupled with her gentle patient management help create a warm caring environment for patients.
Dr. Schallhorn is originally from Elkhart, Indiana. She attended Capital University in Columbus, Ohio where she majored in biology with a minor in chemistry and graduated Suma Cum Laude. Upon completing her Bachelor of Arts degree, she attended the University of Michigan School of Dentistry and received a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. While at the University of Michigan, Dr. Schallhorn was the recipient of an academic scholarship as well as the Michigan Periodontal Alumni Award. She also received a national award from the American Academy of Periodontology for her scholastic achievements upon graduation from dental school and was inducted into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Society which is the national academic honorary organization for dentists. Dr. Schallhorn completed a three-year post-graduate periodontics residency program at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. While in residency, Dr. Schallhorn completed a Masters of Biomedical Science and received comprehensive training in periodontics.
Following completion of her residency, Dr. Schallhorn was selected as one of three finalists for the 2009 Kramer Scholar Award for Excellence which is a national award given to the best and brightest graduating periodontics resident. In addition, she was also one of four finalists selected to present her graduate research for the 2009 Balint Orban Prize for clinical research and was runner-up in the 2009 Prichard Prize for excellence in research. Additionally she recently completed her written and oral examinations to become a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology.
Dr. Schallhorn is experienced and proficient in diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease, bone grafting procedures, dental implant placement, and a range of cosmetic and corrective periodontal procedures.
Dr. Schallhorn is an active member of the American Academy of Periodontology, Rocky Mountain Society of Periodontists, the Southwest Society of Periodontology as well as the American and Colorado Dental Associations and the Metropolitan Denver Dental Society.
Dr. Schallhorn is the granddaughter of Dr. Robert Schallhorn, and the niece of Dr. Pamela McClain, who has been a partner in the practice for more than twenty years. Dr. Schallhorn is honored to be part of a strong family tradition in the practice of periodontics and is looking forward to improving patient’s lives by caring for their dental needs.
Dr. Schallhorn, a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, is originally from Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. He graduated from Marquette Dental School and was active duty in the Army from 1956 – 1969. He received his Masters of Science in Biochemistry and certificate in Periodontics from the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Schallhorn was key in establishing the University of Colorado, School of Dentistry and was the first Professor and Chairman in the Department of Periodontics from 1969-1976.
He started a part time private practice in 1972 in Denver, Colorado and pursued a full time career in private practice in 1976.
In addition to private practice and academics he has been extensively involved in research and organized dentistry. Dr. Schallhorn’s landmark studies in bone grafting around teeth has impacted the clinical practice of dentistry in this country and abroad. His research with bone graft materials, barrier membranes, growth factors and other materials is well known and has changed the way periodontics is practiced today.
Dr. Schallhorn is a member of numerous organizations and has been president of the local periodontal society (Rocky Mountain Society of Periodontist) as well as the national organization (American Academy of Periodontology - AAP) and a director and president of the American Board of Periodontology. He has served on many committees and task forces with the AAP and the American Dental Association (ADA) including his appointment as Consultant to the ADA Council on Scientific Affairs. Dr. Schallhorn has been honored with the highest awards in the field of periodontics and continues to lecture on topics related to various aspects of peridontics and regeneration in the US and abroad. His passion has always been to help patients improve their health and thus their quality of life.
